Last year when we visited India, our flight bookings were done in such a way that we had to transit in Mumbai. We took this as an opportunity and instead of staying at the airport and wait for our flight to Vizag, we decided to extend our transit and make it a one day stay in Mumbai. It was the best decision ever! Honestly, we got to experience so much of Mumbai just in a day! All the places that I am going to mention are in and around South Mumbai.
Here is a list of things to do in Mumbai, in a day:
1) Stay at ‘The Taj Mahal Palace’
The Taj Mahal Palace is an iconic hotel in Mumbai, facing waterfront and Gateway of India. The architecture of this hotel is splendid and a lot of care has been taken in choosing the interiors of this place. Words can’t describe the hospitality and beauty of this hotel. We recommend that you should stay at least for one night in this hotel to experience the history and magnificence.
2) Gateway of India
This majestic monument is based in South Mumbai’s water front area. If you are staying in ‘The Taj Mahal Palace’, then it can be seen from the hotel and it’s just 2 minutes walk from it. This place can get quite busy during the day, so if you want some good pictures of this structure, then we suggest to come here early in the day.
3) Haji Ali Dargah
Haji Ali Dargah/Mosque is located on a small island off the coast of Worli. We took a taxi from Gateway of India to reach this place. We loved the location and architecture of this mosque. The only thing that disappointed us was the lack of cleanliness in a beautiful and well located place like this. I hope something could be done about it!
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, previously know as Victoria Terminus, is an important and historic railway station in Mumbai, it’s also an UNESCO world heritage site. It’s architecture was inspired by Mughal and Victorian styles. I have to admit, due to lack of time, we couldn’t go inside the terminus. We asked our Taxi to stop outside the building, walked around it and spent few minutes soaking in the grandeur of the building.
5) Colaba Causeway
If you love shopping and are in for some bargain, during your trip to Mumbai, then Colaba Causeway market is a place to go. It’s a market where you can buy variety of things like clothes, footwear, jewellery, leather items, handicrafts etc. This is a place to show off your bargaining skills. I bought loads of Indian bangles, ear rings and necklaces from this market, at a very inexpensive price.
6) Marine Drive
I have to blame all the Bollywood films for it!!! Many Mumbai based films have scenes that were filmed in Marine Drive and that made me want to visit this place desperately. Marine Drive gets more beautiful during the sunset, against Mumbai’s skyline, adding an extra charm to it.
We spend more than hour at Marine drive, had ‘road side’ chai and spent time talking to each other. It was a perfect end to the day, before heading to the airport!
Here is a video diary from my day spent in Mumbai:
We loved Mumbai so much that we have decided to go back to Mumbai some other time, for longer duration, and visit more places. I have to say, I have fallen in love with Mumbai and can’t wait to go back soon!
